About Us

About Us

At For the Love of Dog, we have grown slowly so as to provide the best possible pet care service in Alexandria. Unlike other companies, we stay local, so your dog will never have their walk time shortened so we can hurry to the next far off client. Your pet will never worry about being forgotten, and you won't worry about new walkers coming in and out of your home. Our average employee works with us for 2 to 3 years, and we have pups in our care that have only ever known ONE dog walker!!

We also make your life much easier with no extra fees for last minute requests, and you can cancel at no cost to you until 10am of the same day of service.

Our walkers receive extensive training, have had complete background checks and are fully licensed, bonded and insured.

About Us

Thomas, OwnerThomas, Owner

Thomas started officially working with dogs for the Humane Society in 1989 but didn't start For the Love of Dog as an actual company until 2003. Though FTLOD started out as a dog walking and pet sitting company it eventually evolved to include play groups, boarding, agility and behavioral training. Thomas grew up with dogs and cats all his life including schnauzers, spaniels, huskies, hounds and other mix breeds.

Traci, Head WalkerTraci, Head Walker

Traci is our longest tenured walker and has been with us since 2011! " I love all of my charges with all my heart, and look forward to seeing their sweet little faces every day." We can attest to that as Traci has been a tireless walker that often gives her pups extra time for no extra charge. Traci also handles most of the dog and cat sittings.

Toni started walking with FTLOD in spring of 2012. She is a seasonal walker, walking dogs during Fall, winter and spring then heading to Alaska to be a naturalist and trail guide during the summer. Animals are one of Toni's strongest passions for as long as she can remember! As much as she loves Alaska, every fall she looks forward to returning and being greeted with the wagging tails of her long lost doggie friends at FTLOD!

Emily started walking for FTLOD in 2008. She left to go to school in England in 2010 and we were so excited to have her come back in 2014 again! Emily grew up with a lot of critters around the house: fish, hamsters, gerbils, lizards, a rabbit, several cats and eventually an adorable ancient black cockapoo named Bridget. More recently Emily's family dog was a beautiful husky named Nadia, rescued from a shelter.

Barbara has been walking dogs since summer of 2013. Her favorite quote is "A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than you love yourself". Barbie comes from a family that constantly rescues, loves and cares for dogs in need and she proudly caries on that tradition!

"I am a pooch-lover and always had a deep connection with animals. I am grateful that my freelance job allows me to spend time doing what I am passionate about. Being with doggies feeds my soul and I believe that dogs are more than pets, they are family.

When I am not walking dogs in Old Town, I am working on marketing projects or mastering the art of Italian cooking.

Madeline ForresterMadeline Forrester

Madeline started walking dogs with FTLOD in 2009. This drew her attention to modern, humane dog training. In 2011, she successfully completed three dog training academies to become a Pat Miller Certified Trainer (PMCT-1). She left FTLOD in 2012 to pursue a degree in Veterinary Technology from Northern Virginia Community College. In 2015, she graduated with honors and passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam to become a Licensed Vet Tech. And now, in 2016, she couldn’t be happier to be back walking and training.

Michelle BusbyMichelle Busby

Michelle, originally from South Africa, is a dog walker/trainer and Crossfit coach at Crossfit Kingstowne in Alexandria. She has over 14 years of experience in working with animals (mainly dogs) from all over the world; from volunteer work at shelters in South Africa, kennel attendant work in Vancouver to pet-sitting, dog training and full time live-in care for the elderly with pets in Whales. As a military spouse, she is working on becoming part of the "Train a Dog Save a Veteran" foundation and as a self-taught dog trainer, she is currently in the process of obtaining different dog training certifications. Her love of the outdoors and passion for working with animals is what lead her to FTLOD and she has been with us since January 2016. "This is more than a job to me, I couldn't live in a world without dogs.

  • It doesn't get much better than Thomas and his team at For the Love of Dog. When I went back to work full time I was worried about bringing a dog walker into the house to deal with my rambunctious and sometimes stubborn and difficult 3 year old pup. Thomas was quick to email me back and set up a Continue Reading
